Each Maskelle mask starts as a unique, hand crafted leather mask and is a copywritten original work. A mold is then made from the original, from which each mask is then cast.
I founded Maskelle to make and distribute cast, non-leather versions of my handcrafted leather masks (I still make a few every year, you can check them out at https://www.etsy.com/shop/teonova).
I needed to move on from forming and making each mask entirely by hand as my hands and shoulders are giving me trouble after having done this for 20 years...and it was time to branch out!
Also, I had for years been interested in producing a non-leather mask line.
Maskelle masks are cast molded from a dense foam material that is a lot like the comfy squishy clog material that many people are familiar with.
Some Maskelle masks are made of denser cast foam than others, depending on what suits each design the best. For instance, our goat masks are quite firm, though still flexible, while our wolf masks are flexible enough to be rolled up.
I do detail work to each original leather mask design to ensure that it will work well with the molding and casting materials. Bringing you a beautiful mask in functional (comfy & washable and good looking) and affordable materials.I make sure that the fittings added to each mask, like elastic straps, are high quality and well attached. I have sold so many of my handcrafted masks over the years and it was clear to me that a sturdy, adjustable strap can be a decision-making attribute to the customer.
We may expand to work with other mask artists in the future. Please feel free to contact us if you are a makmaker or designer and this might be of interest to you, and we will chat.
For now, we hope to keep expanding the Maskelle line and working on our Shoreline Cleanups!
